What is a Tower Garden?
It is an aeroponic system that allows you to grow a great number of plants in a very small space, simply because you grow the food vertically. This aeroponic system is very efficient and saves time because you do not need to get dirty tending to the garden.
As growing food in soil is not sustainable for everyone on the planet, this system helps protect the environment while also providing food on the table. You are able to grow vegetables in very small spaces such as the patio and you are also able to grow food all year round. This modern concept is very beneficial as well as efficient and the produce grown in a tower garden is even more nutritious than the traditionally grown food.
There are numerous benefits to tower gardening and we are going to list down the most relevant ones. Besides being able to grow your own food in a small place, tower gardening has a number of other advantages.
Requires 90% Less Space
Thanks to the vertical design of tower gardens, you need significantly less space than with traditional gardening. Your vertical garden actually requires about 90% less space, which is why almost everyone can now grow their own food. Traditional growing methods require a lot of space, which is something we have less of every day.
Uses 98% Less Water
Traditional growing methods require a lot of water, as well. In fact, about 80% of our water is used for watering the vegetables we grow in soil. This is a great problem, as many parts of the world are in short supply of water. However, tower gardening requires about 98% less water, which makes it an ideal growing method for saving water as well as our planet.
Plants Grow More Quickly
Plants grown in a tower garden will grow more quickly than those in the soil. In fact, according to NASA, they grow 3 times faster, so you don’t need to wait that long to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You are also able to grow food all year round due to grow lights, which means you will be able to have a stable supply of food throughout the whole year.
There is much less work involved with tower gardens than there is with traditional growing methods. As there is no soil, there is no weed either, so you spend less time tending to your garden. There is no digging or weeding involved, as well, which means you get to save a lot of time. You may notice a few weeds that find their way to your garden, but they are so few that they don’t represent a problem at all.
Things to Consider First
When you start your tower garden, there are a few things you must take care of. First, you must test the water in your garden in order to determine the pH. Additionally, you also need to clean the filter, which keeps debris out of the pump that provides water for the plants. Check for weed or insect problems, as well - these are not very common but may occur. Once you have everything taken care of, you will soon be able to enjoy fresh produce from your vertical garden that is only a few steps away.
How It Works
Your vertical garden uses a small pump drip irrigation repeat cycle timer and perforated cap to drip the mineral solution over plant roots. NASA developed mineral solutions to be used with tower gardening, which contain much more nutrients and allow us to grow healthier plants. A tower garden is made of a large plastic column with hydroponic net pots placed throughout it. The pump drip irrigation cycle keeps water moving over the roots of the plants. Thanks to a reservoir containing a liquid fertilizer, the plants receive all the nutrients they need to grow, while it is your task to make sure that they get enough sunlight.
You may purchase a tower garden kit and assemble it yourself, which doesn’t take long. The process will take about half an hour and your tower garden kit will also come with a seed starting kit. After that, you will have to grow your seedlings separately. When the seedlings are mature enough and ready to be transplanted, you will add them to your vertical garden.
What You Can Grow
A tower garden allows you to grow a wide variety of plants. You are able to grow both vegetables and fruits, including broccoli, tomato, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, peas, spinach, strawberries and melons.
Moreover, you are even able to grow herbs if you enjoy using fresh herbs when you cook. Basil, chives, cilantro, cumin, lavender, dill and more can all be grown in your tower garden and will be just a few steps away from your kitchen.
If you prefer growing flowers in your garden or you want to include a few flowers, consider sunflower, salvia, pansies, etc. Almost anything that can be grown using traditional methods can also be grown in a tower garden, as well, so you have a variety of choices.
If you prefer to DIY and not buy a tower garden, you are able to easily do so with just a few steps.
Build the Tower
To build your tower garden, you will need to fill a bucket halfway with stones you gathered around the yard or bought in a store. Afterwards, fill about one-third of the container with small rocks. You are able to determine the size of the bucket depending on whether you grow smaller or larger plants.
Insert A Wire Mesh Cylinder
Next, you will need to insert a wire mesh cylinder lengthwise into the stones. Make sure that the bottom part of the wire mesh is completely covered with stones. Now you need to add peat or sphagnum moss on the bottom of the tower garden, so that it keeps the soil moist. This means you don’t have to water the plants frequently.
Add Potting Soil and Plants
Now, fill the rest of the cylinder with potting soil that is about 4-5 inches. It is recommended that you layer the potting soil directly on top of the moss. Then, add a wide variety of plants into your tower garden - you are able to grow edible plants or flowers or both, it is all up to you. Make sure to place sun-loving plants into an area that receives a lot of sunlight. That being said, your tower garden should be placed in a spot that receives about six to eight hours of sunlight.
Growing your own food is priceless, as you always have access to fresh produce instead of having to go to the grocery store. With a tower garden, you will be able to choose any plants your family loves and grow them in your very own garden that doesn’t take up too much space. A tower garden is definitely a smart choice for everyone who enjoys fresh food.
