What I love most about the soaker hose is that it offers a lot of efficiency, probably more than the ordinary sprinkler system. It is the grandfather of drip irrigation systems and for most, is the preferred tool for root level irrigation. A soaker hose has a myriad of tiny holes that are punctured along its length. These holes allow water to drip into the soil at the root of your plants.
Depending on your watering needs, you can use multiple soaker hoses to improve efficiency. They output water at a very low rate and as such, there is very little water runoff on uneven terrain. Additionally, their design makes it easy to place them precisely where water is required.

Taking the crown for best soaker hose is the Melnor Flat Soaker Garden Hose, which is made from woven mesh material and a composite reinforced structure. This allows you to flex, bend, turn and twist the hose without risk of damage. The use of woven mesh material is a huge step-up from models made from recycled rubber as they don’t offer a lot of flexibility. Another advantage of this material is that it can withstand extended exposure to the sun.
This soaker hose offers even water distribution for your flowers and vegetables, thanks to the flexibility and ability to achieve the kind of curving pattern you want. The pressure is quite gentle and the water is delivered just where you want. You get a rust-resistant end cap that allows you to connect several hoses together. The small footprint of the hose and ability to roll up come handy when you don’t have a lot of space for storage.

The Gilmour Flat Weeper/Soaker Hose offers a unique combination of pliability, DIY watering system and sturdy construction. Unlike other models made from typical rubber, this one is durably made from the comparatively heftier perforated PVC liner. The PVC is further coated with fabric to protect the hose from harmful effects of sun’s UV rays. This coating also prevents the hose from getting clogging, hence consistent soaking.
While performance of a soaker hose is expected to deteriorate with time, you will be glad to know that the Gilmour Flat Weeper/Soaker Hose 75ft provides impressive performance for a long time. Installing this soaker hose is easy and if you dislike polluting the environment, this model is a good choice as it’s made from eco-friendly materials.
- Made from heftier perforated PVC liner coated with fabric
- Sun resistant and long-lasting performance
- Backed by 7-year warranty

Pressure regulator and backflow preventer
It is always a good idea to use soaker hose fittings that turn the hose into a smart irrigation system. You will want to start with a backflow preventer and install it between the garden hose and faucet. It will prevent water from reversing the direction of flow back to the drinking water when the tiny holes get clogged by dirt.
Installing a pressure regulator will help prevent damage to your soaker hose in case the holes are plugged. It is activated when water flow into the soaker hose stops. Consider installing a timer on the pressure regulator/backflow preventer assembly. This makes it easier to set and monitor the entire system.
Optimal pressure of water for a soaker hose
Many soaker hoses can handle high water pressure without leakage or bursting. However, it is important to note that the optimal pressure for a soaker hose is 100 psi. This is because in drip irrigation, all you need is to get a seeping effecting from the hose. Most models designed for home use have 50 psi but we urge that you incorporate a pressure reducer in the irrigation system. It attaches easily to the faucet and will effectively regulate water pressure.
Best materials for soaker hose
Most soaker hoses are made from recycled rubber to ensure strength and durability at affordable costs. Such are quite durable, with the ability to withstand ground conditions of the soil and the weather. Recycled rubber is also strong enough to endure puncturing of holes at the factory.
Appropriate length of soaker hose
One of the most common questions among enthusiastic gardeners is how long a soaker hose should be. The simple answer is that it should be long enough to reach every plant in the garden. With that in mind, make sure you take measurements of your garden. Don’t forget to factor in the hose layout you will be using in future. Standard length options for soaker hoses are 25 feet, 50 feet, 75 feet and 100 feet. If your hose is too short, you can combine multiple hoses so long as the pressure allows for it. However, we urge that you don’t exceed the 100 feet mark if you want to get optimal water pressure.
How to install a soaker hose
In addition to the pressure regulator and backflow preventer, you will need a garden hose of suitable length, tee connectors, pressure reducer, hose pins and a faucet adapter. You should also install a programmable timer, although this is optional. It will look after the watering if you are not around to do it yourself. Other tools you need for the installation include scissors or utility knife, metal garden stakes, garden trowel and mulch.
Get started by rolling out the soaker hose system and flushing out the debris. Remove the end cap and attach the hose to a water hose before letting water run through for a while. Remember to do the same twice every year after installing the system.
If need be, cut the hose into smaller sections so that it covers all of the rows. Stretch it out after flushing out the debris and cut it into the right lengths. The next step is to join and arrange the pieces. This is where you use the male and female connectors to prevent leaks in future.
Lay the system, weaving it in and out of the plants if they are not in a straight line. Be sure to keep the hose about 2” away from the plants. The space between the rows of soakers should be 12”-18”.
You are now ready to connect the system to a water source. You can connect it directly to a tap if there is one in the garden. If not, you may have to use a garden hose. Turn on the water and adjust to the appropriate pressure setting.
Use a garden trowel to determine the moisture content of the soil after letting the water run for a while. This will make it easy to how much time you should let the system run until the water soaks thoroughly through.
Finally, cover the soaker hoses with mulch to conserve the water. If you don’t have mulch, bury the hoses underground but not deeper than 6”.
